The Indian judicial system is a shining example that a pro-colonial academic in law and sociology would cite in favour of British Raj. Afore mentioned system came into existence in 1860 after forming of law commission with chairmanship of Thomas B Macauley in 1834 under Charter Act-1833. The laws formulated by British during this period are currently being used as basis in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Burma, Sri Lanka, Singapore and Brunei (Wikipedia-Feb 13, 2015)

Indians who were subject to this new justice system introduced by British soon started feeling the heat. The first victim who paid a price with his life to this justice system was an employee of East India Company. His name was Maharaja Nandkumar, a tax collector of Bardhwan, Nadia and Hugly. He draw East India Company's attention toward financial corruption of Warren Hastings. Latter was enjoying top position of Governor General of the company. The documentary evidence of bribe worth "more than one-third of million rupees" (Archives of Empire: Volume 1. From The East India Company to Suez Canal, 2003) was dubbed as accusation against Warren Hastings. In order to save Warren Hastings, his friend George Vansittart connived with other local Indians and charged Nand Kumar with forgery. Despite having no jurisdiction to try an Indian for a crime against an Indian, in the light of evidence that was termed doubtful according to English forgery statute (The Bribery of Warren Hastings: The setting of a standard for integrity in Administration, Hofstra Law Review, Vol. 10, 1982), Supreme Court judge Sir Elijah Impey, again a friend of Warren Hastings, sentenced Maharaja Nanda kumar to death using English law that held forgery as capital offence (India Under British Rule, 1886, p. 67). Thus, with the help of friends at high positions, Warren Hastings - a designated public robber by Edmund Bruke, saved himself from charges of corruption in India.

Similar attempts are currently being made to save another "public robber" who is famously known as "Social Activist". Her name is Teesta Shetalvad. Teesta Setalvad became famous social activist after infamous riots in Gujarat, India, during Feb-March 2002. Currently she is facing serious "allegations of cheating, misappropriation and breach of trust" (Indian Express Date: Feb 13, 2015) regarding the funds raised to help riot victims.

Her conviction to help riot victims lead to raise funds in substantially large amounts that she has been accused of using for personal benefit. One wonders if helping riot victims was real motive behind the fund raising. Her hate for Hindu community can be gazed from the following tweet of her that links Islamic State horrors in Iraq to Hindu deities.

Furthermore, she was the face of vilification campaign that run against the then chief minister of Gujarat and current Prime minister of India, Narendra Modi. If money trail can lead to source of this campaign, Ministry of Human Resource and Development, India, ministered by Sh. Kapil Sibbal donated Rs 13,900,000/- to the trust run by Ms Teesta Setalvad. No wonders, Teesta lead the hate
campaign against the elected chief minister that lasted for nearly 12 years in
print and electronic media, despite supreme court appointed special
investigation team found no evidence of involvement against Sh. Narendra
Modi.

All criminals are entitled to bail in order to prepare their defence subject to court orders. In this case, she was denied anticipatory bail by high court of Gujarat. On Dec-16, 2014, in a gruesome massacre at Army public school, Peshawar, allegedly by Pakistani Taliban, also refereed as "Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP)" more than 140 school children were murdered. A school teacher was also burned alive. This mindless killing has been justified using Islamic holy scriptures by murderers. Impact of this news, as it broke, was such that simple "condemnation" without any action seemed "putting the issue in cold storage" or "It was just another event".

Despite worldwide condemnation, echoes of the gunshots fired upon unsuspecting school children reflected in civil society of India and Pakistan are more shocking. Taking lead from attackers burning school teacher alive, "Eminent Journalists and Intellectuals" of Pakistan are attempting their best to convince locals that Indians (Hindus, if community is not specified in Pakistan context) are behind this massacre (See video of one well known Pakistani intellectual Dr Sahid Masood below).
Indian "secular" bloc are busy expressing their views comparing Taliban with "Sanghis" in their peculiar way. While Pakistanis were calling people to come forward and file an FIR against the criminals, Indian intellectuals are propagating idea of "reclaiming mosques" based on report published in popular news paper "The independent" that reads

"The leader of the group that carried out the massacre has issued a
warning. “If our women and children die as martyrs, your children will
not escape,” Umar Mansoor warned. In the past, such threats provoked a
terrified silence. No longer. In Islamabad, hundreds gathered outside
the Red Mosque where extremist preacher Maulana Abdul Aziz is based. In
recent days, he had been much in evidence on television supporting the
Taliban."

Furthermore,

" “We are reclaiming our mosques,” Jibran Nasir, the organiser of the protest told The Independent.
“These are our houses of worship and they should represent our concerns
and not that of our enemies.” They came bearing signs, “Go Taliban Go”
and “Apologists are the enemy”. One sign said, “Run, burka, run”."

Nowhere in the report, Hindus are even remotely addressed. However, some authors took the lead in deriving "useful" conclusions/confusions, that demonstrate prevalent "Hinduphobia" among left leaning Indian intelligentsia .

The conversation begins with Ms Versey, for whatever reason, opining that Hindus should reclaim temples from "sanghis" or "Hindu Taliban", a term invented by "Secular" bloc. A local general knowledge says that barring [probably] only 2 temples (Padmanabhswami temple, Kerala and Tirupati, Andra Pradesh), all Hindu temples are under state control. On contrary, Hindus are actively working to get rid of state intervention in temple management and improving conditions of the temples.

Is this appeal, or recommendation in behalf of candidates listed, by religious body changed the electoral outcome? How appropriate for a religious body to issue a whip in the name of "appeal" to voters? How different it is from "imposing one's will on others"?

The ghost of Subhash Chandra Bose (Bose) has greatly haunted Nehru-Gandhi legacy during Indian freedom struggle in India. The British, or may be Europeans in general, who see M K Gandhi as epitome of non-violence, give full credit to Indian National Congress (INC) for Indian independence. Furthermore, apart from M K Gandhi (Gandhi) and J L Nehru (Nehru), all other important leaders of INC hardly get any mention in western historical narrative. This selective approach builds an impression of INC as 2 men army, who fought for freedom without arms i.e. using non-violent methods.

Is it true narrative adopted by officially appointed historians? Or is it the case that historians were hired to perpetuate 2 men army model of the INC? The article, "Culcutta Chromosome" by Patrick French (P French), is another such article to emphasis 2 men army model of INC, who led India to Independence undermining important contributions of others, Bose in particular.

P French argues, that "it was Gandhi and Nehru's policy of patience that secured Indian independence". This statement is lack of substance and long perpetuated myth by colonial rulers and historians of Marxist flavor in Independent India.

This blog is to break this myth using most available information in the public domain and hence not making any new revelations. It is known that Bose was advocating armed fight against British. Therefore, British were keen to arrest him. Bose, as P French mentioned, "escaped" from prison in "Calcutta and travelled abroad disguised as a Pathan pilgrim". Bose also went into negotiations with world leaders, during WWII including Hitler, for his cause - armed Indian freedom struggle.

Hitler is a most polarizing figure in world. Someone, who is not vehemently criticizing Hitler, is often dubbed as Nazi supporter and Holocaust denier (From my personal experience in Australia). Horrors of Holocaust hits first mention whenever Hitler is quoted. This information is nicely used by P French when he pose question "Why should Bose be a hero after his embrace of Hitler?" This question has to be answered.

It is true that Hitler had no positive opinion for Indians. P French rightly mentions, Hitler saying to Lord Halifax, "Gandhi ought to be shot and the
Congress leadership executed in batches of 200 at a time". However, Bose had never expressed slightest consent to Hitler's thoughts. In fact, his opinions for Indians were so negative, Hitler declined to meet Bose and ignored his cause.

Bose was planning to build army using Indian soldiers. He saw opportunity, of building army, in Indian prisoners of war (PoWs) kept in enemy camp. Probably P French forgot to mention that Indian PoWs were used as shooting targets by Japanese army. Following Picture (taken from Wikipedia) should refresh these memories.

Bose, talking to Hitler and Japanese for his cause of Indian independence, really saved many lives of Indian PoWs. This, in my opinion, is sufficient to make him a hero. As a hero, a leader, he made Indian National Army (INA) and fought against British for his cause. He nurtured a sense of Indian nationalism in demoralized Indian PoWs. This sense of Indian Nationalism in British Indian Forces, made British government of that time grant India independence.

P French may be ignoring the conversation of the then prime minister of UK C Attlee and Bengal governer B P Chakravarti that states among several reasons, "the most important were the activities of Netaji Subhas Chandra
Bose which weakened the very foundation of the attachment of the Indian
land and naval forces to the British Government." Furthermore, on questioning contribution of nonviolent movements of Gandhi and Nehru in granting India independence, C Attlee replied "'mi-ni-mal' (Emphasis added)." (from http://folks.co.in/blog/2012/01/23/who-brought-freedom-gandhi-or-netaji/)

N S Rajaraman argues that the fall of British empire began with fall of Singapore. Therefore, independence of India is more closely linked with freedom of South-East Asia. Furthermore, post-war trials of INA members lead to mutiny in British Indian forces. This new development is generally ignored by historians of Marxist flavor. From impeccable British sources, it can be said that Bose made a great contribution in cultivating Indian nationalism. INC, on the other hand, miserably failed to do the same despite enjoying massive popular support. Sometimes, I ask myself, what exactly was the purpose of A O Hume to establish Congress in India.

In article published in The Week, P French makes a subtle and weak attempt to undermine contributions of Bose and therefore fails to decode Calcutta chromosome.

A skirmish between MaCauley Putras and Anglophiles can be seen here. "MaCauley putras" is a term referred to those elites of India who take pride in speaking flawless English. Furthermore, they thank British for coming to India, and enslaving (ooops. educating and hence civilizing) them. On the other hand, "Anglophiles" are those who speak fluent English but refuse to accept that British brought education and hence civilization to India. They also put a bad light on British crimes during British raj.

In Islamic world, it is allowed to marry more than one wife subject to condition that the husband treat all his wives equally. Whatever may be the reason for having multiple wives, there is an ample scope of it being abused.

Some poverty stricken Indian Muslims forget that they are responsible for their daughter's future. For sake of small money paid in return for marriage, they are playing with emotions of their own daughter.

Marriage being a "contract" in Islam, here is a classic report by Sreenivas Janyala published in Indian Express on Mar 10, 2013 that can be said as "a systematic sale of girl" to a foreign tourist.

"Osama Ibrahim arrived in Hyderabad a month ago with very specific
requirements: he wanted to marry a girl below 20; he would pay Rs 1 lakh
to her family as bride price; the marriage would last a month; and that
he would leave the country after a divorce.

The 44-year-old Sudanese engineer, who has a wife and two
children back home, had no problem finding what he wanted. At least five
brokers agreed to provide girls and families meeting his
specifications. He rejected three brides-to-be, before selecting a
17-year-old.

Her story would have become one of many in Hyderabad's bride
bazaar but for the fact that this girl decided to fight back. On March
1, eight days after the nikaah, she managed to escape, reached
Moghalpura police station and filed a complaint.

Since then, Ibrahim, the girl's father Yousuf Ali, her aunt
Mumtaz Begum, the qazi who conducted the wedding, Mohammed Nasiruddin,
and an alleged broker, Zahira Begum, have been arrested. On March 5, the
girl was shifted into protective custody at a Government Girls' Home on
the recommendation of the Investigating Officer in the case, Vijay
Kumar.

"I was surprised when I came to know that the marriage was
performed by a government-appointed qazi. It is illegal. He claims he
did not know about the contract (for the wedding), but I do not believe
him," Inspector Kumar says.

The 17-year-old from Moghalpura's Tallabkatta area has eight
younger siblings—two brothers and six sisters. Both her parents, Yousuf
and wife Ayesha, work as labourers. Yousuf has two other wives, with
several more children. His two brothers and their families also live
with them.

An intermediate drop-out, the girl says she was told she would be
marrying a wealthy engineer, who would pay her father Rs 1 lakh. "I did
not know that he was 44 years old and already married. On February 21,
the nikaah was performed at our house and, even before I could give my
consent, the ceremony was over. I was in shock and do not even remember
saying kabool. Only after the ceremony did I see him," she says.

"After the wedding, he came to our house every day but I always
found one excuse or the other not to be alone with him. My friend helped
me slip away from home and call the police," she says.

Zahira Begum, who is accused of brokering the marriage between
the Sudanese and the girl's family, initially tried to pass herself off
as a distant relative. But police have found that she was not related
and allege that she is a well-known broker operating in Charminar,
Moghalpura and Barkas areas.

The girl's aunt met Ibrahim through brokers, who also contacted
families of several other girls. "Ibrahim chose this girl, paid the
money to her aunt and within hours, a qazi performed the nikaah. The
girl was taken home and was to return to the guesthouse where Ibrahim
was staying, but she slipped away from home and lodged a police
complaint," says Kumar.

Ibrahim is among the many "grooms" from Sudan and Nigeria
believed to be scouting Hyderabad for young girls to marry and leave.
The racket that was earlier confined to sheikhs from the Gulf has spread
to these African countries. There are cases where young students from
East African countries have entered into contracts with girls' families
with a clause that the alliance is to automatically end the day they
complete their studies and return home.

"It is often girls from poverty-ridden families who are forced to
agree. Sometimes there are six to eight girls in a family, and they
feel there is no way out. The understanding is that the bride price
received would pay off debts, if any, and help the family in dire
straits. It also paves the way for other girls in the family to marry,"
says Shiraz Amina Khan of the NGO Women and Child Welfare Society.

If anything, getting such brides has become easier. "Earlier, at
least the bride price was a few lakh rupees, now it is just about one
lakh. After brokers take their cut, the family ends up getting less,"
says Khan.

The Waqf Board says that government-appointed qazis do not
perform these contract marriages. But the girl's case proves this to be
wrong. "Such marriages cannot be considered valid under the law of the
land or Islamic law. Poor families are falling into this trap lured by
brokers and fixers," says Ikramullah, chief of the government-appointed
qazis for Hyderabad. He adds that he would make sure that Nasiruddin,
who performed the girl's marriage, is convicted and never performs
another nikaah.

Last July, concerned over the increasing number of such
marriages, the Waqf Board had called a meeting of government-appointed
qazis. "Our aim was to convey to the qazis that they should desist from
performing contract marriages," Waqf Board chairman Syed Gulam Afzal
Biyabani says. However, of the 14 government-appointed qazis, only eight
turned up. "Of the eight, two said they would not perform a marriage if
they 'felt' something was not right or the girl 'appeared' to be a
minor. Only after we talked tough did they agree to scrutinise all
marriages involving foreign nationals," a Waqf official says.

Officials admit the demand and the ready supply, given the
desperation of the families, make it difficult to break the nexus.
Still, they believe, the Waqf Board is not strict enough. "The board
should not attest marriage certificates in suspicious cases and insist
on couples registering their marriages. Qazis should be asked to file
copies of all nikaahnamas of marriages they perform. If the board wants,
it can ask the qazis to insist that foreign nationals get permission
from their governments to marry here," says Zahid Ali Khan, editor of
Siasat newspaper, which ran a campaign a few years ago against contract
marriages.

One of the senior-most qazis in Hyderabad, Ali Abdullah Rafai,
was arrested in 2011 and his licence cancelled after he arranged
contract marriages of several minor girls with Arabs. In the past two
years, at least six government-appointed qazis have been either
suspended or arrested, according to the Waqf Board.

"Everyone knows that in Islam, such contract marriages do not
have any validity," says Khan of the Women and Child Welfare Society.
"They are just disguising what they do by labelling it a contract
marriage." "
The first article was jointly written by Javed Anand, general secretary, Muslims for Secular Democracy and Teesta Setalvad, secretary, Citizens for Justice and Peace on Aug 17, 2012. In response to above article, Madhu Trehan, Journalist/Director, News Laundry, wrote another article on Aug 22, 2012.

Teesta Shetalwad become famous after her "Anti-Modi" campaign in Post-Godhara riots in Gujarat that occurred in 2002. She has become a brand ambassador for "Secularism" in India. Let her views on recent Mumbai riots that originated from azad maidan speak for her.

"Ask all the questions, seek explanations, make comments on what the
Mumbai police did or did not do before, during and after a Muslim mob
behaved in despicable fashion — torching OB vans, attacking media
persons and the police, molesting women constables, snatching arms from
the police — in the backdrop of a rally at Azad Maidan last Saturday, to
protest atrocities against Muslims in Assam and in Myanmar. (Police and
the organisers agree that it was an armed group that suddenly surfaced
outside the maidan and turned to violence.) But do allow for the
possibility that responding in a most “un-police-like” fashion to
extreme provocation, the city’s police commissioner, Arup Patnaik, may
have opened a happy chapter in the otherwise unhappy Muslim-police
relationship in the metropolis.

Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray is most unhappy that the police
commissioner did not issue a blanket shoot-to-kill order. But the
latter’s exemplary restraint is precisely what peace-loving Mumbaikars
need to thank him for. Instead of repeating history, Patnaik has tried
creating one.

Flashback to 1989. Even after the then Union government had
issued a ban on The Satanic Verses, a few hundred Muslims instigated
allegedly by one man took to the streets raising incendiary slogans,
provoking the police. The cops gunned down 14 Muslims, to which the
additional commissioner of police (law-and-order), S.M. Shingare, added
the threat: “If they come for us, we’ll draw more blood.”

Fast forward to December 1992: in the immediate aftermath of the
demolition of the Babri Masjid, under orders from the then police
commissioner Bapat, well over 200 Muslims were gunned down in less than
72 hours. Bapat’s justification: a “shock treatment” was essential to
control the mobs.

Add to these the conviction of over 80 per cent of the more than
123 accused in Mumbai’s March 1993 serial blasts in sharp contrast to
the total impunity to the perpetrators of the January 1993 anti-Muslim
violence, plus frequent complaints about alleged arbitrary arrests of
Muslim youth in recent years, to get some sense of the highly strained,
estranged community-cop relationship.

Senior journalists and social activists from Mumbai are aware
that, given the absence of justice, the wounds of 1989 and 1992 are
still festering. Thankfully, Patnaik, who was a deputy commissioner of
police when Bombay burned (1992-93), has not forgotten either. It’s his
act of remembering, and reminding, that prevented yet another bloodbath
and ensured that the situation did not spin entirely out of control last
Saturday.

It perhaps needed both courage and conviction on his part to
march up to the dais in the midst of a highly volatile atmosphere and
grab the mike to remind the charged gathering that neither police nor
Muslims should forget what happened in 1992 and that both must do
everything possible to prevent a repeat and reopen wounds. For the
violent mob outside the maidan, the message meant nothing. But to the
much larger assembly of Muslims gathered inside the maidan, it got home.
As most of them dispersed peacefully from the other end of the maidan,
it became easier for the police to deal with the murderous mob and to
disperse them with the minimum use of force.

Those inclined to think this is too charitable an interpretation
of the role of the police may wish to recall that whenever under attack,
the police themselves tend to run riot. Every human life is precious
and the tragic loss of two Muslim lives is not to be ignored. But nor
must we forget that the mob was entirely responsible for the provocation
and the overwhelming majority of those injured were policemen and
policewomen, not to mention the unpardonable molestation of the latter.
Peace was restored in about 30 minutes and mercifully the situation in
the city is under control.

What if Patnaik had opted for the “shock treatment” precedent of
his predecessors? For well over a week, MMS clips are being forwarded
mobile to mobile, in Mumbai and elsewhere, with gory pictures of what’s
being done to Muslims in Assam and Myanmar. Many of these pictures are
obviously doctored, having nothing to do with Assam or Myanmar. But who
cares? They are enough to inflame untutored minds, being told to see for
themselves how Islam is under attack everywhere and to ask whether they
will remain mute spectators. Imagine if pictures of Muslims being
gunned down by the police in Mumbai were to get added to the MMS clips?

Mercifully, the Mumbai police have denied such an opportunity to
those, whoever they might be, who seem to be working overtime to incite
Muslims. As things stand today, the Mumbai police are the injured party,
while the city’s Muslim leadership, such as it is, is compelled do all
the explaining, apologising, forgiveness-seeking, appreciating the role
of the police.

It must not be easy for Patnaik and the top rung of the Mumbai
police to calm the nerves of those whom they lead. But the police
commissioner’s remarkable restraint has opened up an opportunity to heal
wounds, open a new chapter. It’s an opportunity Muslims must grab with
both hands. Patnaik and his police having done their duty, it’s the duty
of each one of us now to help identify those who seemed determined to
set the city aflame last Saturday and to isolate parties like the Shiv
Sena and the BJP who are all too eager to communalise the situation,
whether in Mumbai or Assam."

This is how above article rebutted in an extremely communal (Anti-secular) manner by Ms. Madhu Trehan.

"Rarely has an article befuddled me as much as Teesta Setalvad and
Javed Anand’s article, ‘Making history, not repeating it’, in The Indian
Express (August 17).

The first paragraph describes the violence in Azad Maidan: “...a
Muslim mob behaved in despicable fashion — torching OB vans, attacking
media persons and the police, molesting women constables, snatching arms
from the police....” Then the authors laud Mumbai Police Commissioner
Arup Patnaik for not acting against the violent mob. The article
continues, “But do allow for the possibility that responding in a most
‘un-police-like’ fashion to extreme provocation, the city’s police
commissioner, Arup Patnaik, may have opened a happy chapter in the
otherwise unhappy Muslim-police relationship in the metropolis.”

Let’s replace some of the words in the first paragraph with substitutes and see how it plays.

Replace “Muslim” with “Hindu”. Would the authors have written the
first paragraph if the mobs were Hindus? Is the law to be adjusted
according to the religion of the miscreant?

There is shocking footage of Police Commissioner Arup Patnaik
ordering Deputy Commissioner of Police Ravindra Shisve to release a
rioter who is being arrested. The video link has been blocked on YouTube
but can be seen on Twitter links. This is how Twitter transforms from
social media into political-info media.

The footage shows PC Arup Patnaik shouting at DCP Ravindra Shisve
who holds a (should I say “alleged”?) goon (pleading for mercy) by the
collar, “Tumhala koni hyala pakdayala sangitla (Who has told you to
catch him?)” Patnaik then threatens to have the DCP suspended.

“You take directions from the commissioner. You are not SP of
Sangli. You are DCP here. You will not fall out of line or you will be
suspended, stupid,” Patnaik bellows.

Am I missing something because I am not a Mumbaiker? No, because
there are questions raised in Mumbai’s Mid Day newspaper (August 16,
2012). Some of the questions: “Why did Commissioner of Police Arup
Patnaik force a DCP to release an apprehended rioter from the spot? If
speakers incited the protesters with hate speeches, why are they still
roaming free?”

The Setalvad-Anand article then reads: “Shiv Sena supremo Bal
Thackeray is most unhappy that the police commissioner did not issue a
blanket shoot-to-kill order. But the latter’s exemplary restraint is
precisely what peace-loving Mumbaikars need to thank him for. Instead of
repeating history, Patnaik has tried creating one.” Why is Bal
Thackeray’s emotional temperature relevant in this? I really don’t care
much about Bal Thackeray. A fact checker would ask: How did they gauge
his emotional state? It is a mystery. The gloating over Bal Thackeray’s
mental state stoops to the lowest denominator of one-upmanship.

The authors continue: “Thankfully, Patnaik, who was a deputy
commissioner of police when Bombay burned (1992-93), has not forgotten
either. It’s his act of remembering, and reminding, that prevented yet
another bloodbath and ensured that the situation did not spin entirely
out of control last Saturday.”

Every community is scarred by wounds that cannot be picked up
selectively as a response justification. A fact checker would ask: How
do the authors know that Patnaik’s mind “remembering and reminding” was
his reason for asking his DCP to release a goon? A slight understanding
of how India works would tell you that the order to do exactly that had
come from political bosses.

More pearls: “As things stand today, the Mumbai police are the
injured party, while the city’s Muslim leadership, such as it is, is
compelled to do all the explaining, apologising, forgiveness-seeking,
appreciating the role of the police.”

The authors seem to believe that there is a moral high ground in
becoming the “injured party”, possibly from a habit of
victim-self-righteous-politics. No security force should ever be reduced
to an “injured party”. Their morale to protect our nation could hardly
be triggered by the satisfaction — let them run riot, but hey, now THEY
will have to explain, apologise and seek forgiveness! Is there any dot
of understanding about how demoralising it was for the police force?

The authors conclude: “But the police commissioner’s remarkable
restraint has opened up an opportunity to heal wounds, open a new
chapter. It’s an opportunity Muslims must grab with both hands.”

“Muslims must grab with both hands”? They expect the same
mobsters to be so moved to soft emotion that they will grab hands and
sing Hum Honge Kamyaab some d-a-ay? A Bollywood screenwriter would say:
Yeh realistic ending nahin hai! Badlo!

We have all read about the controversy magnet Teesta Setalvad. I
believed she worked hard for what she believed in: getting justice for
victims of violence in Gujarat 2002. But, with Teesta it was difficult
to keep up with the spiralling versions of each issue. Even then, I gave
her the benefit of a busybody do-gooder. Now this article puts a
complete end to that assessment. What motivates social activists? Let’s play with humanistic
psychologist Abraham Maslow’s Humanistic Theory of Self-Actualisation
(the “Hierarchy of Needs” theory and self-actualisation). First, it
starts with the need to help others and it is altruistic. With a bit of
success and acknowledgement of the good work he/she is doing, the
activist becomes a hero. He/she gains followers and is surrounded by
sycophants. Any challenging views are dismissed. The final stage takes
place — the activist falls in love with himself/herself. Now this
activist who started with altruistic reasons, has become a danger to
society. The activist is so taken in by his/her Jungian Hero Archetype
bordering on the Martyr Archetype, that anyone else’s opinion or
perspective is held in contempt. Because the Archetype is so enthralled
by his/her own sacrifices to the cause, to make them worthwhile, blind
faith in one’s self is essential. If he/she admits he/she is wrong on
any point, it means a lifetime of service has been wasted.

Gujarat 2002 upset and shook me up. Many Tweeters have sincerely
tried to convince me that Narendra Modi was not responsible. I,
sincerely, have not been convinced so far, since I have seen stories
with evidence and footage that show the opposite. But an article like
this one by Setalvad-Anand is enough to turn me into what is called an
Internet Hindu. India cannot afford to have different rules of
engagement based on people’s religion, caste or gender. I believe that
is enshrined in our Constitution. Destroying the Constitution for a
vote-bank is worse corruption than black money. An incendiary article by
Setalvad-Anand can do as much damage as violence in Azad Maidan. To
paraphrase Arun Shourie: This is bending over backwards." (This full article is available with full video on newslaundry)
Looking at the "Secularist Manifesto", it is not surprising that Secularism favors specific brand of communalism (Islamism in this case). This kind of "communalism" first attempts to find a reason to claim "victimhood" and commit violent acts. This kind of selective "Secularism" poses severe threat to multi-cultural fabric of India.vihang bhatthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14634604027233415795noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7197394324945302952.post-61457950485387850362012-08-23T13:09:00.002-07:002012-08-23T23:00:09.493-07:00Vishwarath to vishwamitraIn good old times of DoorDarshan, we had some good TV serials. India claims to be a vibrant democracy. Freedom of speech is essential constitutional right given in any democracy. In a newly achieved status of free market economy, free speech is becoming an scares commodity. The current environment of print and electronic media that rarely echo common Indian voice, social media like Facebook and Twitter has made deep inroads among people to communicate their views.

Extremely critical of the print and electronic media that shapes general views of Indian citizens on government policies, the group of critics has been terms as "Hindu Right Wing" by overwhelming "Left" leaning press. Main Stream news Media (MSM) is facing increasing threat as their "STAR" news presenters and debate organizers, and wrongly presented as journalists, are topic of the debate. As a "Self" regulated entity, satellite TV news network is doing its best to silence this new voice.

A certain section of MSM in India has become a mouth piece of government. The scam ridden government of UPA (United Progressive Alliance) led by Congress has made great record in defrauding Indian citizens by means of financial scams. Surprisingly MSM, a fourth pillar of democracy, is not critical enough. Is the government funding the MSM for not playing its rightful role?

Social media, on the other hand, is extremely critical of the scams and under-reporting of the same in MSM. It has caught government sleeping and some "STAR" journalists by surprise, threatening their credibility. In retaliation, shameless government (colluding with "STAR" journalists) has decided to block certain tweeter accounts. This is termed as "Tweemergency2012". The blocked tweeter handles include some well known journalists who also write in MSM.
Twitter has become a natural balanced critic of sponsored news by advertisers. It presents an absolute ruthless assessment of news media by audience. By sponsored news, we mean paid advertisements as news, commonly known as "Paid News", for political/religious/cultural parties and/or special coverage of special events for getting attention. As Vinod Mehta says "Paid-for news is emerging as the single-most serious threat to our collective credibility". The story of media can be best described as
Twitter has been a troublesome area for those who do not like their criticism. Some of the eminent journalists are facing real threat to their credibility as the agenda of discussion in not restricted to their studio domain. Recently twitter trended a hashtag <s>#</s>AntiHinduMedia that speaks for this "Anti-communal" bias in "Secular" press of India.

The general perception developing among Indians for corporate media in India is they purposefully coin terms provoking Hindu sentiments but give a cold shoulder to violent Muslim mobs. e.g. coverage of recent Mumbai violence.

Inquiry in to the matter (role of RSS) in the exodus of the people is not required. It is presumed that RSS is an extremist organization through Nehruvian allegation of RSS hand in killing Gandhi. Dr. Ram Puniyani is an active member in a group of NGOs that collectively work for communal harmony in India. In order to achieve communal harmony, Dr. Puniyani sometimes deliberately or ignorantly distorts some historical facts.

Recently Dr. Puniyani's article put some light on Assam violence and role of state. He argues that "communal violence is a multilayered phenomenon". This phenomena initiates with general perception of minority (Muslims in present context) . i.e.

"They are invaders"

"more loyal to Pakistan"

"beef-eaters"

"they convert by force, fraud, or allurement"

"they are infiltrators"

etc that, according to Dr. Puniyani, "many firmly believe these to be true".

It is true to an extent that Islam came to India with Arab traders. However, spread of Islam did not occur until Muslims militarily invaded. First in the list, of series of Islamic invasions, was Mohammad-bin-Qasim. In his military campaign, whichever "towns he took, like Alor,
Nirun, Debul and Multan, in them he established mosques, appointed Muslim
governors, and propagated the Muhammadan religion" (from Chachnama,
trs. in H.M. Elliot and J. Dowson, cited in Ch. 1, Indian Muslims who are they by K. S. Lal). Rest is a long history, described in great detail by Dr. K. S. Lal. Religious zeal, among Muslim rulers, might be deliberately kept hidden for various socio-political reasons by Marxist historians in India. Thus, general perception among Hindus, as Dr. Puniyani opines: "They are invaders", is a historical fact.

Beef eating is not new phenomenon among Muslims. Therefore they are natural "Beef eaters" in Hindu psyche. The cow, or animals in general, has been made "sacred" by Hindus to provide immunity from slaughter. Dr. Puniyani, quoting scholarly work of Dr. D N Jha, opines that "Wealth was equated with the ownership of the cattle" in the ancient India. If this is true, it is bizarre to argue that Hindus were killing/eating their own wealth (beef) and destroy it. Nevertheless, he vigorously argues that animal sacrifice was a normal practice in ancient India to please their gods. The inference, that Hindu "gods such as Indra and Agni are described as having special
preferences for different types of flesh", was derived from Brahminical literature called "Vedas". Early historians attributed "Vedas" to "Aryans", a nomadic tribe, for whom "animal sacrifice was a dominant feature till the emergence of
settled agriculture". Using modern genome techniques, it has been proven beyond doubt that "Aryans" as described in "Vedas" never existed. In fact, "Arya", a Sanskrit word meaning "Learned and well mannered person", was made out to be a racial term "Aryan". Therefore, misinterpretation of "Vedas" is plausible.

In a non-scholarly work of Internet age, learned #InternetHindu Agniveer argues that cruelty against animals is strictly prohibited in Vedas and related ancient literature. Ancient text on laws of Manu says: "Those who permit slaying of animals; those who bring animals for
slaughter; those who slaughter; those who sell meat; those who purchase
meat; those who prepare dish out of it; those who serve that meat and those who eat are all murderers" (Manusmriti 5.51, cited in "No beef in vedas" by Agniveer). It should be noted that Manusmriti is not written by "God". Hindu philosophers devised these rules to prosper in biodiversity and live with natural harmony. With such a strict rules of living, it is not surprising that orthodox
(strict followers of Laws of Manu) Hindus do not touch/eat meat and
liberal Hindus avoid eating meat even today. On the contrary, without quoting Manusmriti, Dr. Puniyani claims that even "Manusmriti did not prohibit the consumption of beef".

Muslims have enormous affinity to their religion. This passion also is a reason among Muslims of India to love Pakistan. It is not hidden and Muslims feel proud that Islam is fastest growing religion. One of the factors is religious conversion by force or volunteerism. Forced conversion of non-muslim women Rinkle Kumari has recently surfaced in the media. However, it is claimed, by forcing the victim to declare, that the religious conversion is not forced. In Muslim majority society, it is practically impossible to deliver justice to other religious minorities as judiciary feels "a great deal of pressure" from armed personals supporting Islamic cause. The abductions of non-muslim women and forced marriage to her abductors, does not restrict with one case of Rinkel kumari. This is a slow and opportunistic but continuous phenomenon. Therefore, it is true in several cases that "they convert by force, fraud, or allurement". This kind of predatory conversion of women to Islam is termed "Love Jihad".

In Assam, there can not be apparent growth of Muslim population just by natural multiplication, argues Nath et al.
Authors proposed a method to estimate undocumented migrants in the north-east region of India. The peer reviewed numerical study reveals "growth especially shows remarkable among religious groups of Muslims and among linguistic groups of Bengali speaking population". This disproportionate growth of
Muslims in Assam can not be explained without considering infiltration
from Bangladesh, concludes the study. Therefore, there "are infiltrators", has some truth
in it.

It is now understandable that Dr. Puniyani, allegedly described as "prejudice" of Hindus against Muslims, in reality, portrays his secularist communality favoring specif religious group ignoring others. In order to avoid communal tensions, Dr. Puniyani indirectly advises, Hindus should not protect their "wealth" (Cow) in their own homeland where Cow enjoyed protection for thousands of years.

How does this Secularist communalism work?

Very recently so called communal mass movement led by Baba Ramdev in Delhi and Secular mass movement organized by Raza Academy in Mumbai was observed. Volume of the gathering in these two mass movements can be seen from the following picture.

The picture clearly shows
the difference in two mass protests. Swami Ramdev's protest was entirely peaceful and no undesired incidences observed. The picture shows nation is standing behind Baba Ramdev against corruption.

On the other hand, agitated Muslim group
(left) very soon turned violent and damaged public property. Proposed peaceful demonstration in Mumbai, against persecution of Muslims in Assam and Burma, appeared to be a well crafted method to destroy peace and tranquility of Mumbai. Needless to say secular press did not give importance to this senseless demonstrations in which 2 lives lost and several police officers injured. These days Assam is burning. The main stream media is trying their best to brush aside the issue by terming either it is a communal issue or ethnic conflict. This conflict has historical roots. Unfortunately historical knowledge differs widely in India. In an interesting talk with editor of Asian Age I have learn something that I never learned in my school.

<s>@</s>bhattvihang Most NE India states have history of rebellion against India, of which they were never historically a part until British rule.

So North East was historically never part of India until British rule. This made me curious when actually India came into existence. So next question

<s>@</s>bhattvihang Good question. 140 characters not enough for this, all I can say is, I'd go with 1947.

Naturally 140 characters are not sufficient to explain entire history that we learn in our schools. I discovered very lately (mainly during my civil services preparations) that history tutored during schooling in India is very shallow.

At least, gladly, 1947 was the first conservative guess for India to emerge on world map. In my attempt to obtain probable year of birth, I decided to put the question little differently

So the year India born changed from 1947 to 1950 when first constitution was adopted. But is it all? No. Constitution of India has been amended several times in the past. In short span of 1950 to 1976, constitution was amended 42 times. Interestingly, "Socialist" and "secular" words in the preamble of constitution were added in 1976 under 42nd amendment.

Therefore, India did not born until 1976. really?

Of course narrative of India differs from person to person. According to Sir Winston Churchill, greatest Briton ever, India "is merely a geographical expression. It is no more a single country than the Equator". Its appalling that similar views exist even today in elite and extremely learned community of India. This poses an extremely serious question. What is the concept of India? Any answers?
In an excellent piece of journalism Dr. Engineer describes how monstrous attacks, by Bodo tribal community, has wounded peaceful innocent "Bengali speaking Muslims". Author, an eminent secular historian, mentions 58 person killed and nearly 400,000 displaced out of which 300,000 were Muslims. However, author does not mention a word on religious/ethnic identity of those killed and remaining displaced persons. The religious identity of victims is kept undisclosed for many reasons. Though, mysterious hiding of "religious" affiliation of victims can be manipulated by secular groups on later analysis of this riot.

Secularism is a political movement. This political movement, on one hand claims to protect rights of certain religious groups, on other hand it demonizes native ethnic groups. The method of demonetization of local ethnic community is based on suitably revealing information. According to Dr. Engineer clashes began "with 4 Bodo youth who came on motor cycle on 6th July with guns and killed two Muslims and ran away". It is surprising that Dr. Engineer directly
blames Bodo youth for killing of Muslims without presenting any
supportive evidence. However, in retaliation "unknown people (assumed to be Begali Muslims) killed four ex-militant Bodos". Interesting to note here is that when attackers on Muslims can be clearly identified as Bodos, Muslim attackers becomes "unknown people" in secular framework.

The rediff.com reports that "trouble started on May 29 with the Muslim youth group, the All Bodoland Minority Students' Union (ABMSU), protesting against the removal of a signboard from a mosque, allegedly illegally built on a forest area". This explains Bodo agitation is, against Muslims, on their land encroachment. Subsequently, "Bodoland Territorial Council administration prevented the protesters from forcing shops and offices to close". In contrast to Dr. Engineer, the source reports "on July 6, two Muslim youths were killed by unidentified gunmen in Kokrajhar district". Later "on July 19, two more Muslim youths, leaders of the ABMSU, were killed in the same district". This gives an impression that retaliation was not envisaged before leaders of ABMSU were killed. Since attackers were unknown, target was local minority. As Dr. Engineer asserts, "Bodos are no more than one-third of the population in that area (even less than that)", Bodos were soft target to attack. In a quick payback mode, "four former Bodo Liberation Tigers cadres were killed by a Muslim mob", on July 20.

Dr. Engineer argues that "besides Muslims there are other people too like Koch Rajbonshis,
Santhals and Adivasis though Muslims constitute majority of non-Bodo
people". This minority statistics supports a calculated guess that Muslims form overall majority in that area.

Illegal immigration of Muslims is not unknown in Assam. It has been argued that increase in Muslim population is predominantly resulted from illegal immigration from Bangladesh. However, this important phenomena is completely ignored by Dr. Engineer. Instead of addressing this issue concerning national security, Dr. Engineer recommends, "Territorial Council should be annulled". Thus, legitimizing illegal infiltration. In a best diversionary tactic, Dr. Engineer argues that BJP has "added much fuel in propagating that Bangladeshi Muslims
are migrating in large numbers giving highly exaggerated figures
without any basis". On the other hand, he ignores the data from "Directorate of Census, Government of India" (cited in "Assam Burning"; CenterRightIndia) showing disproportionate increase in a specific religious group in Assam - A significant indicator of infiltration of Bangladeshi Muslims. Since Bangladeshi Muslims speak "Bengali" as their native language, Dr. Engineer conveniently merges them with Indian Muslims by depicting them as "Bengali speaking Muslims".

In conclusion, in the name of secularism, a specific flavor of communalism (Islamism) is being imparted on native bodo tribal of Assam. This kind of secularism promotes reverse communalism (anti-islamic sentiment) among the native people and harms national security and social balance. This kind of secularism might have given rise to organization such as BLT. These organizations exist to oppose state approved settlement of illegal immigrants. However, they are portrayed as trouble makers by the state and central Government. Secular press yet to label "BLT" as "Hindu" terrorist organizations to demonize "Hindu" society in international forums.
vihang bhatthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14634604027233415795noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7197394324945302952.post-64082516612095108502012-07-29T14:47:00.001-07:002012-07-29T14:47:37.714-07:00Secular justification of Assam Violence

I had lengthy debate with a "Secular" tweeton @brownbrumby on continuing violence in Assam. One particular feature noticed is that whomsoever tries to criticize congress, critic gets "RSS" tag. This "Secular" bloc firmly believes that on going conflict in Assam is "ethnic" and not "communal". By saying "ethnic", this "Secular" bloc deliberately hide/deny important issue of illegal infiltration from Bangladesh.

This debate forced me to think who are "Secular" that forms "Secular Bloc". "Google Intelligence" helped me find "Secularist Manifesto" on leftist Guardian. It added to my knowledge that secularism is a "political movement seeking specific policy end-points". Now that specific policy "end-points" may differ in space and time. This "Secularist Manifesto", in case of United Kingdom (UK), is against overwhelming presence of "Christianity" in the state parliament. This manifesto is to protect human rights of "non-christians" and/or "un-christian" legal residents of UK. Thus, it presents a very sensible case of the legal state subjects. But does it applicable to illegal residents in UK? If yes, why UK need to spend money on border security and legal immigration system? I leave it for UK nationals to decide.

Yes, I was arguing with my wrong concept of "Secularism" in this discussion. I had previously hypothesized that "Secularism" refers to "religious neutrality". I firmly believed that "Secularism" has nothing to do with politics. In my view, politics combined with religion is a toxic mix that ruin the state. For example, in Nigeria where religion used in politics led to ethnic conflict between northern (Muslim majority) and southern (Christian majority) states. Nigeria is now at the verge of its partition on this religo-ethinc line just like Sudan. Sudan and Nigeria provide evidence that religion can not be ruled out as a driving force for ethnic violence.

Assam violence has illegal immigration problem at the core that has posed threat to its socio-cultural identity. The first president after independence of Bangladesh from Pakistan, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman argued that "without the inclusion of Assam the East Bengal economy could not be balanced". Does it indicate infiltration of Bangladeshi nationals in India is a planned long term annexation strategy of a newly born nation in 1971?

By looking at "Secularist Manifesto", it is not difficult to determine silence of "Secular" Indian media on this issue. Furthermore, why it is spreading disinformation regarding ongoing violence against natives of Assam. "Secular" Indian media is sleeping despite the fact that supreme court of India has termed this infiltration as "silent invasion" of Bangladeshi Muslims. This "Silent invasion" is now causing "ethnic" conflict with "religious" agenda on political sphere.
vihang bhatthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14634604027233415795noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7197394324945302952.post-49125580398927701642012-07-24T04:37:00.001-07:002012-07-27T12:38:17.802-07:00Developing situations in Assam.

The family channel of CNN-IBN governed by @sagarikaghose and @sardesairajdeep came up with headlines "Assam violence death toll rises to 21, shoot-at-sight order issued". Without mentioning reasons for the riots in this excellent piece of journalism, press release (source: PTI) mentions "miscreants set ablaze a camp of the disbanded Bodoland Liberation Tigers", giving an impression that riots are part of a movement against state of India. To further confuse people reading this news in other parts of India, it further says "In Kokrajhar district, nearly 40,000 victims have taken shelter in 35
relief camps set up by the government, while more than 10,000 victims
have themselves taken shelter in various schools and government offices
in Chirang as the government has not opened any official relief camp,
official sources said.". With such a large number of internal forced displacement, this confused master piece of journalism is liked by none and disliked by 9 fellows so far.

But above is assumed to be in continuation of previous reports. The same esteemed channel shows couple of more articles titled "Assam violence: Over 36,000 flee their homes","Assam riots: Toll reaches 19; fresh clashes on","Assam: Shoot-at-sight order issued in Kokrajhar". However, "The root cause of the communal violence still remains unexplained". Further it goes on to say "The trigger though took place in a village called Joypur on Friday where four people where hacked to death. After that attacks and counter attacks have spread like wildfire". But who attacked and who counter-attacked is still not clear. Surprisingly, "The AAMSU subsequently withdrew the bandh following an appeal by ministers". But when did AAMSU gave a bandh call in the first place and what is legitimacy of AAMSU? It is clear from the news reports published on esteemed CNN-IBN that Bodos were at the receiving end - "An abandoned hostel of Bodo students was set ablaze at Bidyapara in Dhubri district with the fire brigade initially being prevented access before police intervened". Furthermore, was "camp of the disbanded Bodoland Liberation Tigers" actually "An abandoned hostel of Bodo students"?

The #InternetHindu were not satisfied with this confusion and looked at the foreign sources of news. Reuters reports that "India struggles to control deadly Assam riots, hamlets razed". In this report, some hints of what is going on in North-East India is available. Some communality mixed with lot of confusion has already mentioned in CNN-IBN reports but who is rioting?. The answer is, "Rioting between Bodo tribespeople and Muslim settlers has raged for days". The beginning of riot - "The violence reportedly erupted on Friday night when four youths of the Bodo tribe were killed by persons unknown -- in retaliation, armed Bodos attacked Muslims". If Muslims were settlers how they reached near Bhutan border? where is the origin of these settlers? Here is the Answer from International Business Times. "in the eastern Indian state of Assam over the weekend in clashes between indigenous Assamese Bodo tribes and Muslim immigrants from neighboring Bangladesh". So Bangladeshi Muslims who infiltrated India, could settle near Bhutan border and the state administration is helpless in stopping it. By any chance, this infiltration poses a threat to local North-East tribal culture with "some 300 tribal and ethnic groups"? Where are Indian cultural programs on profit making privatized main stream media (MSM)? what efforts have been made for Indian cultural integration by MSM? But @sagarikaghosh of CNN-IBN will blame racism when ill-informed Indians interact with each-other.

Assam riot is not a small communal problem as Indian media want #InternetHindus to believe. In the larger picture (favorite phrase of @bdutt), "India's Minister of State for Home Mullappally Ramachandran said last summer that almost 1.4 million illegal Bangladeshis have migrated to India over the past decade alone.Ramachandran described the illegal immigration from Bangladesh as a "big problem" and that the government is dealing with it". This is a symptom of much larger problem relating internal security of India.

A short description of Drona's principle to accept students has been discussed in "Counter Intellectual Brahminism - 1" [1]. This part is to specific to the arguments presented by Anand Patwardhan in his Times of India article Intellectual Brahminism [2] and its relation with current controversy of Ambedkar's cartoon.

It has already been argued that Brahmins as teachers did not restrict the flow of knowledge [1]. If Mr. Patwardhan's argument is true, who educated western scholars, one of the most complicated language Sanskrit? Ain't Sanskrit or knowledge exclusive to Brahmins?

Mr. Patwardhan forgets that poverty does not identify castes. Therefore, economic criteria is more suitable for uplifting poor section of the society. Why should a rich from so called "Dalit" get economic advantage over a poor disadvantaged "upper" caste? Mr. Patwardhan is correct in saying Mandal commission did not invented Castes. The word "Caste" has a Portuguese origin [3]. Thus, Caste is a Portuguese black box model to understand Indian society. The economic criteria that Mandal commission used was specifically applied with this "Black box" framework [4]. In this "Black box", economically backward "upper caste" deprivation for centuries was completely forgotten.

Wondering, how this "Caste - A Portuguese black box" is anyway linked to the cartoon controversy [5]. The cartoon is self explanatory. It portrays the then prime minister of India, Pt. J. Nehru, is pushing for early completion of constitution. Amused people of India are watching this circus. Some "Dalit" political "Elites" attempted to exploit this issue by putting the cartoon completely out of context. The context understood here is "Pt. Nehru, a Brahmin, is insulting Dr. Ambedkar, a Dalit, in front of entire nation". Needless to say a fore mentioned context is not an intellectual reading of the cartoon. Similar ill-intellectual connection has been demonstrated in https://twitter.com/beenasarwar/status/210909426603917312 linking [2] and [5].

Dr. Ambedkar presents an extraordinary example that intellect is not restricted to Portuguese construct of Brahmans. Brahmans were intellectuals who used their wisdom to organize society that lasted more than 3000 years. How they achieved it, is a matter of debate. Dr. Ambedkar achieved the status of "Brahmin" by using his knowledge and made constitution of India. In reality, Dr. Ambedkar converted to Buddhism to get rid of any Caste attribute [6]. Today's political class abuse Buddhism by introducing "Dalit", therefore caste system, in it. Author of this blog is waiting for that day when modern historians introduce concept - "Brahmins considered Buddhist as Dalits in ancient India. This is one major reason why Buddhism declined in India."

So let Mr. Patwardhan keep his thumb, very modern symbol of illiteracy, with pride. Brahmans do not need him to sacrifice his pride.

It is interesting to note some section of society has hatred to core for Brahmins. One such example has been found by a "Muslim" intellectual Ms/Dr Beena sarwar: https://twitter.com/beenasarwar/status/210909426603917312

The article quoted was written by Anand Patwardhan [1] that ends with line "let the Dronas write their editorials; Eklavya will no longer sacrifice his
thumb." Here Dronas were referred to senior columnist of a news paper. The article [1] goes on to make some baseless allegations such as "The priests of old tightly controlled information flow and ensured that the masses
would remain illiterate and powerless." This misconception need to be addressed.

The story is narrated in [1] on Eklavya - a Shudra was son of a Bhil community leader. In other words, He was prince of confederation of Bhil tribes at Nishadha [2]. Before looking into this story, we need to know another rejected student of Drona. The reject student name is Karna, who played role in Mahabharata war [3].

Karna was introduced to Drona as a son of charioteer. Drona simply rejected him on the grounds of his principle that "He is teaching only to Kshatriyas". Drona was unaware of the fact that Karna was born Kshatriya. After rejection by Drona, Karna began his search for a teacher (Brahmin) to teach him archery. He found teacher named Parshuram. Parshuram has made principle that "He will not teach anything to Kshatriyas". Knowing Karna as a son of charioteer, Parshuram accepted him as his student.

Once rejected by Drona, unlike Karna, Eklavya decided to make statue of Drona. He put his full faith in Drona statue, while learning archery by himself. Drona came to know about Eklavya when a dog came to him with mouth filled with arrows. The arrows were shot by Eklavya in such a way that dog was just made silent without killing him. Drona investigated and found that Eklevya was practicing lessons by himself. Drona asked Eklavya who is his teacher as former had refused to teach latter. Eklavya politely replied, his teacher is no other than Drona, pointing his finger to statue of latter.

Two victims of Drona's principle used different approach to obtain knowledge. One obtained from another Brahmin teacher while another obtained through extreme respect for a Brahmin in form of a "Guru" - a teacher. Eklavya never accepted any one as his teacher except Drona. Thus, former made a statue of latter.

The thumb impression is very important symbol for illiterates in modern world. Therefore, the message hidden in Drona-Eklavya story [2] will often remain hidden. The demand for thumb by Drona was an extreme test of Eklavya. It was a test of "Shisya Dharma". Eklavya successfully passed the test. Learned Eklavya presented a Nobel example of "Guru Bhakti" and got rid of very symbol of modern illiterates.

In modern India, all three legends are remembered with very high esteem. Drona was an exceptional teacher and, Arjun and Eklavya were his exceptional students. Awards are named after these exceptional personality in Indian history (Not Mythology, Marxist historians feel free to disagree though) for exceptional contribution in sports education.

One can always argue that there was hidden agenda of Drona for Thumb-chopping test. This agenda was to make Arjun invincible warrior in archery. His favoritism for Arjun was well known. Drona saw a formidable challenge for Arjun in the form of Eklavya. However, one can see in later stage of Mahabharat that favoritism of Drona led to his death by his most favorite student Arjun. On many other occasions, Mahabharat depicts down side of favoritism. This favoritism exist among many diverse relationships e.g. father and son (Dhritrashtra and Duryodhan), husband and wife (Arjun and Draupadi), Nobelist vs treacherous (Yudhisthir vs Shakuni).

This discussion suggest that Shudra were free to choose their own way of life. There is no reason, otherwise, to make Eklavya a prince of Shudra community "leader". Furthermore, Brahmins in this period did not controlled flow of the knowledge. There are few important questions need to be answered. who determined caste as upper and lower caste? If caste in a society can be attributed to a work group, how one work group is superior to another? who decides it? Certainly not God or a Brahmin.

Note: Wikipedia references are used to provide general information on important Mahabharat characters. Most accurate description can be found in original text of Mahabharat.

This article is aimed to make counter arguments to Dr. Ram Puniyani's youtube post that has been referred in blog (http://chagataikhan.blogspot.de/search/label/Bajrang%20Dal). The arguments Dr. Ram Puniyani make in this video is that "All kings Hindus/Muslims/Christians have destroyed holy places of other religions. The reason to destroy temple is to loot wealth stored in the temple". Furthermore, in this video Dr. Puniyani suggest that Mahmud of Gazni's iconoclasm and destroying holy places was not unique to Hindu places of worship. Mahmud of Gazni also destroyed Muslim places of worship. we will examine these claims made by Dr. Puniyani in this article.

It is not surprising that Dr. Puniyani has chosen to follow Marxist history to build his opinion. Marxist flavor of history is widely accepted as real history of India. Furthermore, Marxist historians have dominated in writing history books for NCERT (National Center for Educational Research and Training) in India.

Lets examine arguments presented in this video one by one. In this video Dr Puniyani mentioned that on the way to Gujarat, Gazni (also known as Gaznavi) had to fight with Muslim king of Multan. Latter than destroyed many mosques in Multan after conquest. In this narrations, Dr. Puniyani omits one important feature that the mosque destroyed by Gazni were those belonging to Ismaili sect of Islam. Sectarian violence is well known among different sects of Islam. Mahmud of Gazni was an orthodox Sunni Muslim[1]. It is, therefore, justified for him to destroy mosques of other sects of Islam. Furthermore, Mr Khaled Ahmed notes in his article published on August 14, 2005 in daily times "... Ghaznavi attacked Multan and Mansura and killed non-orthodox Muslims along with the infidels."[2]. This shows Mahmud of Gazni's religious zeal for Sunni sect of Islam. Dr. Puniyani and other Marxist historians conveniently forgets the fact that Islam is not a monolith religion. In the same article, Mr Khaled Ahmed also notes "Sadly, the Ismailis destroyed another mandir in Multan and built a mosque in its place ...". This emphasis that Muslims freely used their muscle power to destroy Hindu places of worship irrespective of their sects.

In order to undermine religious zeal in demolishing Hindu places of worship, new concepts were introduced. In case of Somnath Temple, a classic case of historical subversion, Mr. Khaled Ahmed quotes acclaimed historian following Marxist approach of historiography, Prof. Romilla Thapar.

"Sunday magazine of Nawa-e-Waqt (17 July 2005) had a write-up derived
from Romilla Thapar saying that before Mehmud Ghaznavi destroyed the
mandir of Somnath in Gujarat, he was told by someone that Somnath was
actually the temple of Manat.

Manat was a goddess of pre-Islamic Arabia whose black statue (unshaped
stone) was taken from Makka and brought to Gujarat. Ghaznavi was
supposed to be following the directive of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) that
the mandir of Manat should be destroyed."

However, the argument, Somath temple was a temple for a Arab goddess of pre-Islamic era, does not hide the Islamic religious zeal of destroying non-Islamic places of worship and iconoclasm. Furthermore, there is no historical evidence that shows Somnath temple was indeed a temple of Arab goddess Manat. It is plausible that Gazni's greed for wealth in Hindu temples may tempt him to employ Hindu generals to direct his army. This employment does not show Gazni's generosity towards infidels.

In another case, Dr. Puniyani makes a failed attempt to portray generosity of Aurangzeb - A Mughal king towards infidels. Aurangzeb has phenomenal record of destroying Hindu temples in India[3]. In another classic example of historical subversion, Dr. Puniyani narrates a story of Aurangzeb's journey to Kolkata with 44 Hindu kings. This story was first appeared in a book, The Feathers
and the Stones, authored by Dr. P. Sitaramayya. This story has been discussed in detail by Dr. K. Elst [4]. It is interesting to note that there exist no authentic record of Aurangzeb made any visit to Bengal during his life time[4].

Historical subversion by intellectuals is knowingly performed to avoid communal disturbance in today's globalized environment. However, Historical subversion leads to gross injustice to natives of any geographical region. It not only undermines atrocities perpetrated by foreign armies but also justifies their actions. How can one justify unprovoked invasion, loot and plunder of Mahmud of Gazni in Gujarat?

Banning the book "The Satanic Verses" authored by Sir Salman Rushdie in India for hurting religious sentiments is quite often seen as protection of minority right and respect to concerned religion. However, it is not the only reason for banning of a book. One purpose of restricting publication of such books is assumed to have developed for suppression of critical thinking by virtue of "Culturalization". Objective of the article is to understand effects of "Culturalization" on social interactions and its recordings known as history.

"Culturalization" is referred to development of an ideology subject to influence of specialized training and/or controlled access to information. During British Raj (Colonial India), "Culturalization" of Indian ideological thought begun. Under British Raj this "Culturalization" was particularly “English” or "British". Ideological thought process was also influenced by eminent European scholars such as Carl Marx, Aldous Huxley and many more. In this new "Culturalization", original Indian thought was sacrificed. In absence of electronic media like Internet, print media (books, newspapers etc.) was only channel of information exchange and cultivation of new ideas. Therefore, banning a book had a great influence in the past.

First example is a book written by Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, also known as Veer Savarkar. Veer Savarkar participated in Indian freedom movement. He wrote a book on 1857 mutiny in the British Army, first war of independence as referred by him. The title of the book is "The Indian War of Independence of 1857", originally written in an Indian regional language Marathi in 1908.

In the English version of the book, very first paragraph of publisher's note says

"Most historians, British as well as Indian, have described and dismissed the rising of 1857 as a ‘Sepoy Mutiny’ or at best ‘The Indian Mutiny’. Indian revolution is on the other hand, and national minded leaders thinkers have regarded it as a planned and organized political and military rising aimed at destroying the British power in India."

This note suggest that British historians would prefer to record and propagate information as it suits British interests in colonial India. This was to avoid political unrest that may evolve by propagation of free information, challenging the British Raj. Furthermore, "Culturalization" of Indian historians also propagated the British view of "The Indian Mutiny". Publishing this book was also a challenge. In order to avoid publication of the book, British intelligence agency stole couple of chapters of manuscript written in Marathi language. After learning from the stolen chapters, inference was drawn that entire book could spread some critical information against colonial interests. The book was banned much before its official publication.

The banning of books is not only British Raj or colonial feature. Books are banned worldwide. One interesting banned book was found on internet as reference, while reading another banned literature in India. The banned book quoted in abandoned literature was originally written in Dutch. The title of the book was "De ondergang van Nederland" authored by Mohammad Rasoel. The book was published in 1992. It was later translated in English as "The Downfall of Netherlands - Land of Native Fools" by Faust. The book was banned in Netherlands by judge, in a court trial, terming it as a "racist pamphlet". Later, the print copy of books were taken off the shelves and destroyed. It is assumed that no paper copy of the book survives. Luckily it was found on internet. Blogger sincerely thanks to dennisw for keeping this book accessible.

The book was based on life of author, born in Pakistan. In large part of the book, author described how he "escaped" to Netherlands in search of a better life. The book presented his violent personal experience in his home country and variety of incidences in different nations. Author also praised extremely liberal Dutch society and put some light on different kinds of discrimination. Further, this book was his valuable contribution in understanding social and cultural differences. The translator of the book writes in his forwarding note

"Whosoever reads the references to the evolution of mankind, to the argument about various forms of discrimination, and to the naivety of the Dutch, as well as the detailed explanations regarding the mentality of the Muslims, illustrated with quotes from the Koran, "Though if they oppose you, then kill them," shall not only reconsider their own position in society opposed to the Muslims, but also look differently at the reflection in the mirror, this time with the eyes of the author, who possibly, because he basically writes against himself, could be seen as truly objective. As a side note, the author kept his true identity and location confidential, afraid to make the same mistake as author Salman Rushdie."

As little known musician, author of the banned book wrote quite in detail about very personal life experience and social behavior that is quite intrusive to survey. This conclusion is derived from his observations of women behavior in Dutch society and Moroccan society. In his observations author notes

"In my own street, in a comparable situation to the last one, a Moroccan woman who recently gave birth to a child all alone at home was surrounded by Dutch women from the neighborhood who were all sorry for her. 'What a horrible experience that must have been', they said, placing themselves in her situation, without realizing how normal something like that in third world nations is."

Furthermore, on socialization, author notes

"It happens that a Dutch girl wants to kiss but doesn't want you to touch her body, goes with you but doesn't want to pull off her clothes. ... A girl in Morocco kisses to have sex, or not at all, and if she's stupid enough to pose in her underwear, she might as well become a prostitute because her family would never believe her and cut all ties."

The cultural difference noted by author is significant. In Islamic and South Asian culture, family as a unit and attachment among its members differ to that of modern Europe or North America. Traditional family in former culture is a group of 3 generations - Grand parent, Parent and Children. Whereas, modern definition of family is a group of 2 generations - Parent and Children. Grand parents are not part of this modern family of parents. Furthermore, cultural difference of attachment to family play prominent role in individual behavior in public life.

Dutch society, as author points out, is very sensitive to discrimination of any kind. His objective, according to this blogger, was to keep natives informed on different aspects of "discrimination". Following passage of author clearly points out that any sort of social behavior can be attributed to certain kind of discrimination. Therefore, sensitivity to "discrimination" is exaggeration unless performed more often in normal routine.

"And though skin color doesn't matter, whites cover their bodies with sunscreen to get brown, and blacks put some other good on their skin to become white, ... All the nonsense, babble, and drama... And then to realize that nobody thought about there being more sides to the word 'discrimination.'

Direct discrimination: A ship got stuck at the pole. A helicopter comes to the rescue with warm meals for the whites and bread for the blacks.

Indirect discrimination: Whoever calls American people nice, calls at least one people not nice.

Subjective discrimination: An old Dutch woman is afraid of foreigners, and avoids them.

Objective discrimination: A Dutch moviemaker wants native Dutch actors for his Dutch movie - he doesn't want Moroccans.

Counter discrimination: A Turk who only rents rooms to Dutchmen.

Reversed discrimination: A Dutchman who isn't allowed in a bar for dark skinned people.

Inversed discrimination: Foreigners who are treated better and get more opportunities than the native Dutch."

This information could have been very useful to understand social behavior and assimilation of migrant society without much friction and fear of cultural differences. Blogger added this paragraph as he learned recent development of banning burkha in Netherlands.

Two cases of denial of information were presented to demonstrate "Culturalization" of thought, in Indian society during British Raj and Dutch society, by banning certain books arguing offensive or dangerous content. Such books sometimes provide very critical information, difficult to derive from public surveys.

Ban on the book authored by Veer Savarkar was lifted after India gained Independence. However, the book is yet to find its space in academic society. On the other hand, the book authored by Mohammed Rasoel is currently banned.

"Culturalization" achieved by banning such thought provoking books lowers tolerance and promotes extremism. Recent demonstrations against a lately canceled visit of Sir Salman Rushdie at Jaipur Literature Festival clearly show increase in intolerance. A level of intolerance reached that live video interview was not allowed.
vihang bhatthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14634604027233415795noreply@blogger.com0
